A short introduction to the work of Kyoichi Tsuzuki | ||

Born in postwar Japan in the year 1956, Kyoichi TSUZUKI is one of those children being raised in a rapidly developing society. Since those days the Japanese culture as well as the society changed to a degree where there is hardly any connection to the ancient Japanese culture left. Today's Japanese culture is continuously developing, with every step getting further from its own heritage. With this knowledge Tsuzuki has the ability to freely investigate into every field of cultural practice without any prejudice on the value of creativity - everything is worth to take a look at. After studying Literature at TokyoÕs Sophia University, he started his career as writer and editor for the hip and popular magazines Popeye and Brutus from 1976 to 1986, dealing chiefly with contemporary art, architecture, design and urban life. Although he has been concerned about international aspects in culture and art as well, e.g. by compiling Art RANDOM, the 102-volume comprehension of the variety of contemporary art between 1989 and 1992, he had mostly focused on the city of Tokyo and the life and style of its people. As a portraitist of the various urban life in modern Tokyo with his eyes widely open for the weird, strange and odd he never got lost on the path of other journalists who have been praising the imagery of the so-called Japaneseness. As to the words of TSUZUKI the Japanese Media would produce an imagery of the Japanese culture either purely historistic or blinded by the fascination for a certain modern style. TSUZUKI as an editor, journalist, writer and autodidact photographer, tries to show in his own field of media another side of the Japanese culture that is much more devoted to the everyday-life and the creativity of non-professionals. For him, the density in Tokyo houses, the numerous collections of fetish objects, the kitschy interiors and the design of desire seen in several Love Hotels are only a few indicators for the existence of high emotion, deep personality and strong passion in the real life of Tokyo. |
