April 11 Prof. Gleiter continued with his introductory lecture on ãWhat is philosophy of architecture?Ò. He gave an outline of this new field of study in architecture culture, eventually changing its title ãPhilosophy of ArchitectureÒ into ãCritical Culture Philosophy of ArchitectureÒ. He pointed out that Critical Culture Philosophy of Architecture conceives of architecture as the most central, mediating cultural practice. It theorizes the changing role of architecture in the present information society. It is based on the notion that contemporary culture is affected by some major conceptual shifts: from the modernist productivist paradigm to the digital paradigm and furthermore from the modernist object production to image consumption in the contemporary information age. As a critical practice Critical Culture Philosophy of Architecture understands itself neither as meta-physics nor as a meta-theory, but as a discipline critically investigating the role of the architectural practice within the broader field of culture. It is based on linking the architectural practice to media theory, critical theory, phenomenology and critical culture philosophy of the city. By now Waseda University is the only institution of higher education to offers a course on Critical Culture Philosophy of Architecture.

April 12 At the occasion of the freshman orientation at Ookuma Hall Prof. Lee and Prof. Gleiter were formally introduced to the students of the faculty of architecture.
