0n the Workshop Spirit
--Joerg NoenningOne day somewhere in the outskirts of some provincial capital(Southern Japan), two containers were unloaded--right smack in the rice paddies--and a banner was unrolled: The Waseda Bauhaus School in Saga. At the same time, another one suddenly appeared downtown at some small waterflow. here,it severly disturbed some patient citizens who got used to fishing exacty around the spot(it must be stated, with rather mediocre success: 3 lean fishes per afternoon)--since the steel box contained a number of strange looking architectural(!?) objects, which soon were to be followed up by a bulk of 100 even more suspicious strangers arriving and finaly occupying the site. Gathering in a tiny barack for two weeks,in a city that provided not much chance of distraction, which even had no local food worthwhile menthioning, all the intruders had arrived with the singlemind alm of pushing their imagination beyond the limits and coming up with simply disturbing artistic ideas without precedence. Suspectfully scrutinisd by the Saganics, they soon began to unveil several ways of uncommon behavior. It started with them climbing up containerroofs to smoke and sit there while fervently discussing their works. Whats more, they wore sophisticated fashion, an outlook best described as "productive" and"enduring"…Even during night time they passionatelykept on working, accompanied by inspiring though noiseful music that rather suggested theire taperecoders were broken. They would sleep on their drawing desks, yet they maintained that wondeful concentrated silence during the morning hours as their ideas came up sharp and clear. And if they had succesfully passed another harsh prooject critique (actually, there never had been anyone who did not…)they would celebrate short and intensively with another one oof theire fabulous parties that use to feature international folk song contest as well as original bauhaus ballet…
Nothing less than perfect setup for bundeling imaginative energy, one certainly felt an atmosphere beyond the ordinary, to put it simply: an aura. A spirit to be called at least exalted, that was hovering through the designs schemed out on the drawing desks as well as through the heads of those who conceived them. At a certain point all of them had realised that whole things was just about lifestyle and liberating creativity. As they had grasped this, one after another turned himself into an objects of event and art, they became human noise, very entertaining one, indeed. By then everyone knew, that an ambitious name demands ambitious people and attitude. And "Waseda-Bauhaus School" definitly ask you for "being somewhat strange".
